I've been struggling with guilt at not maintaining a 100% vegan diet. I followed Marisa's advice and am sticking to a vegan diet for four weeks. I agree with you, that after three to four weeks, I think it will be a lot easier for me to maintain a vegan diet. But I also think you make some great points about not stressing out over every single ingredient in the (mostly) vegan foods we eat. I like your stance of being 95% vegan, because I know that even if I try my hardest to choose a vegan menu option at a restaurant, most of the time it's going to be prepared with a trace amount of animal product. But I still think I'm doing the best I can in that situation. Thanks so much for your encouragement and responding in the cheering section. I'm thrilled to have found your blog!

MirandaMirandanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6022686032862851954.post-15106996328027341172011-03-21T19:28:08.310-04:002011-03-21T19:28:08.310-04:00Thanks, Jill! Thanks, Jill!Vegan Fazoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03119429652469756034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6022686032862851954.post-30606518676667482552011-03-20T22:19:53.318-04:002011-03-20T22:19:53.318-04:00While some vegans/vegetarians may have had an easy...While some vegans/vegetarians may have had an easy transition, it's not the case for most newbies. We need to help them understand that steps in that direction are worthy of celebration so we don't discourage them all together when they're not "perfect" from day 1. I love how you've done that here--great Meatout post!Jillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05007183513993458901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6022686032862851954.post-36748943473279011282011-03-20T21:55:05.375-04:002011-03-20T21:55:05.375-04:00Thanks, eatandtalk, I appreciate the feedback! I e...Thanks, eatandtalk, I appreciate the feedback! I enjoyed the pros & myths part of your Meatout post as well.

Going vegan is certainly a process. Personally, I chose to get it over with quickly (like ripping off a band-aid) and did it cold tofurky :-). I just stopped buying animals products and stocked a completely vegan pantry. I found Barnard's claim to be totally true, which is what I tell full-time vegetarians who want to give up cheese, milk, eggs, etc. but feel so strongly attached (even addicted) to those food items. If you just stop eating them all together for several weeks, your tastes WILL change and you will be able to have a full culinary life without them.

The times when I do indulge in them (a dozen or so days a year) is really for the sake of convenience. When I am away on longer vacations or home for the holidays I will eat vegetarian options. But I definitely find the animal products have an addictive quality. If I wasn't committed to veganism from an ethical standpoint, eating them even very occasionally as I do would certainly be a slippery slope for me.

Looking forward to reading more of your blog, and thanks for visiting!Vegan Fazoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03119429652469756034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6022686032862851954.post-34734775967060469992011-03-20T15:30:17.711-04:002011-03-20T15:30:17.711-04:00Great advice. It took me a full two weeks to finally give up cheese, but I've been happily 100% vegan for 3 years now.
